Unraveling Luffy’s Family Tree: Exploring His CRAZY Lineage
It’s safe to say that Monkey D. Luffy has one of the most intimidating family trees out of any anime main character. Every single one of his relatives is notorious for their strength and influence on the series. From a legendary Marine hero to the head of the revolutionary army, let’s take a look at his insanely overpowered family!
Luffy’s Family Tree:
Monkey D. Garp:
Luffy’s grandpa, Monkey D. Garp, is a legendary Marine hero. When he was younger, he was equal in power to a prime Whitebeard and Roger. Having nearly captured Roger on multiple occasions and defeating the Rocks Pirates alongside Roger earned him global recognition.
Garp raised Luffy with a tough-love approach, dropping Luffy into harsh environments so that Luffy could get stronger. I can’t help but feel bad for him though, all he wanted was for his family to be Marines… We all know how that turned out haha.
Monkey D. Dragon:
Luffy’s father, Dragon, is shrouded in an aura of mystery. We don’t know much about him other than the fact that he is the revolutionary leader and the most wanted man in One Piece. While details are scarce, we know he fights for freedom and equality, opposing the oppressive rule of the World Government. Who can blame him though, the celestial dragons are absolutely horrible.
His limited interactions with Luffy paint a picture of a caring father, even though he is absent in Luffy’s life. His goals of overthrowing the world government seem to be his top priority, but it doesn’t seem like he has the resources to pull it off. We actually don’t even know for sure how strong he is or what his powers even are. Hopefully, we learn more about him, his powers, and his goals, but for now, he remains a mystery.
Sworn Brothers Ace & Sabo
Luffy has two brothers: Portgas D. Ace, and Sabo. Neither Ace nor Sabo are related to Luffy by blood, however, the trio took a sworn oath of brotherhood over a cup of sake. Both of Luffy’s brothers are very well-known in the One Piece world for their own reasons.
Ace was famous for being the second division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. This title lasted until his death during the Marineford Arc. The only other person known to have held this position was Kozuki Oden, who held it before Ace. Ace was also the first known user of the Flame-Flame fruit (Mera-Mera No Mi), and he demonstrated that he was a skilled fruit user throughout his battles with foes such as Aokiji.
Sabo is known for being the 2nd in command of the Revolutionary Army. He managed to claim the Flame-Flame fruit after Ace’s death, and he recently earned the title “Flame Emperor”. Sabo is also one of the few individuals who is aware of Imu’s existence – a piece of knowledge so hidden that the Gorosei (five elders) tried to kill him because he knew it.
